The faded sepia photographs of the streets of central Faringdon of a century or more ago show our familiar buildings to have had much the same appearance as now. But one cannot help wondering about the myriad anonymous individuals who people these scenes - the little girl in knickerbockers, the maidservant sweeping steps, the carter holding the horse's bridle, the lady in the feathered hat - mostly unaware that one record of their lives is now held for the future on celluloid.

What were their names? What was their home life? What joys or troubles were they fated to know? Which to enjoy contented old age, which to die in war or accident?

Will future generations look at these photographs of us - and wonder...........
