Faringdon Rugby Club or Faringdon Rugby Union Football Club to give its full title, was established in 2004 and since then membership has increased to over 300. This includes minis and juniors, and a veterans team, and currently over 25 women players.
The club was started by Rachel Kenyon, who had recently become School Sports Coordinator for the Faringdon Partnership of Schools based at Faringdon Community College. In September 2004 Faringdon Rugby Club (in association with Grove Rugby Club) ran its first ever Sunday morning session for children at the school field. Many adults soon wanted to join and the ‘Silverbacks’ (more than a few grey hairs!!) were formed. The children became the ‘Blackbacks,’ the girls’ team were the ‘Pinkbacks’ and the really old and retired team became the ‘Goldenbacks’. Suitable shirts were designed by Darren Kenyon. Training and playing took place in the school grounds with the Duke of Wellington and the Red Lion as the clubhouse. The lack of changing facilities and refreshments outside the school buildings made it difficult but they persevered until the Folly Sports Park, Stanford Road opened in 2012.
The club held their first summer camp in 2022 for over 35 children. Rugbytots classes are also run regularly for young boys and girls aged 2-7. Sessions are based on key motor skills such as passing, kicking, catching, running, agility, awareness of space and balance. More … https://www.faringdonrugby.club/
